DESCRIPTION

Bromine is the only non-metallic substance in liquid form at room temperature, with the chemical formula Br. It is a deep reddish brown liquid with an irritating odor and is classified as a Class II controlled precursor chemical.

Chemical property

The chemical properties are similar to chlorine, but the activity is slightly weak, so bromine in bromide can be replaced by free chlorine (Cl2+2Br -=Br2+2Cl -). Bromine is a strong oxidizing agent. In the presence of water, bromine can oxidize sulfur dioxide into sulfuric acid and generate hydrogen bromide; In alkaline media, nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and urea are oxidized by bromine to produce nitrogen gas; Bromine oxidizes ammonia into free nitrogen in the gas phase and generates white smoke of ammonium bromide, which is often used in production to check for leaks in liquid ammonia equipment and pipelines; Bromine is more stable than chlorine in the presence of secondary bromic acid. Under sunlight, if bromic acid is present, it is more stable than chlorine. Toxic and highly corrosive. Bromine dissolves in water and undergoes a disproportionation reaction to obtain hydrobromic acid (HBr) and hypobromic acid (HBrO); Dissolve in potassium hydroxide to obtain potassium bromide and potassium hypobromate; Bromine vapor and hydrogen gas ignite and combine to produce hydrogen bromide, which dissolves in water to obtain hydrobromic acid; Bromine water and potassium iodide solution undergo displacement reaction: Br2+KI=I2+KBr (with the addition of CCl4 organic layer, it turns purple red); Bromine and metallic sodium react violently to produce sodium bromide; Liquid bromine can be added to benzene under the catalytic action of iron (ferric tribromide) to form bromobenzene.

Packaging, storage and transportation

Packaging with acid resistant ceramic jars or glass bottles, sealing the jar (bottle) mouth or sealing with wax, gypsum, etc. Industrial bromine has a net weight of 25kg or 30kg per jar. Put the jar (bottle) into a wooden box, and add padding between the box and the jar (bottle) to prevent crushing. The packaging should have clear signs of "drug presence" and "corrosive substances". Belonging to Class I inorganic acidic corrosive substances, hazard code: 91030. It should be stored in a cool, ventilated, and dry warehouse. To prevent direct sunlight exposure, isolate from flames and heat sources, and avoid co storage and mixing with ammonia, phosphorus, aluminum powder, and alkalis. Keep away from flammable materials such as sawdust, shavings, and straw to prevent combustion. Handle with care during transportation and loading and unloading to avoid breakage of jars (bottles). In case of fire, water, dry sand, and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers can be used to extinguish it.

Purpose

Mainly used for the production of bromide, as a common analytical reagent, oxidant, absorbent for ethylene and heavy hydrocarbons, and brominating agent for organic synthesis.

Bromine is one of the important chemical raw materials and a major branch of marine chemical industry. The various inorganic bromides, bromates, and organic compounds derived from it have special value in the development of national economy and technology.

Bromine is an important chemical raw material with wide applications in industries such as flame retardants, fire extinguishing agents, refrigerants, photosensitive materials, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and oil fields.
